What is RoadWise? RoadWise is the program name adopted for the highways and drainage component funded by the Transportation "Half-Cent" Sales Tax proceeds. In the fall of 2004, Charleston County voters agreed to add a half-cent sales tax on purchases made in the county for 25 years or a total investment of $1.3 billion. (click here to download the ordinence). The sales tax will be spent on two priorities - green space acquisition and transportation projects including mass transit. Collections of sales tax funds began to be collected in May of 2005. Voters passed a second bond referendum in November, 2006, which approved an additional issuance of up to $205 million that may be used on additional roadway projects.
