Project Background

In March of 2001 a public meeting was held to gather public input regarding the Cross Island Parkway.  The entire project area bounded by Maybank Highway, Bohicket Road, and River Road was evaluated to identify new alignment corridors. These corridors were located such to minimize environmental impacts and consider sensitive issues previously expressed by the public, i.e., access provisions, interruption of farming activities and continuity of land tracts. Based on comments received at the public meeting, traffic data and environmental studies, a report was prepared to determine the feasibility of widening existing or locating an additional roadway corridor on or through Johns Island.  The Johns Island Traffic Corridor Study was prepared for and submitted to Charleston County in May of 2001.

From the time when the study was completed, changes in development and land use have impacted traffic volumes necessitating the need to update the study. A public meeting was held on October 9, 2007 to gather public input for the Cross Island Parkway Study update.

The location map above shows the study area circled in red.
